The best way to identify
animals you've never seen before is to use a key. A key is a structured
list of questions that helps you work through the animal kingdom to
identify what you've seen, or caught. If you've ever played the game
"Animal, Vegetable, Mineral", you've got a head start!
Recommended Field Guides:
- A great guide for beginners is The Freshwater Name
Trail. This is a foldout, laminated guide produced by the Field
Studies Council.
- Small
Freshwater Creatures: Pocket Guide by Lars-Henrik Olsen, Jakob
Sunesen (Illustrator), Bente Vita Pedersen (Illustrator).
This is a super field guide. It's suitable for beginners but
goes into reasonable detail.
- Pond
Life by Trevor Beebee, Phil Egerton (Illustrator)
- Frogs
and Toads by Trevor Beebee, Guy Troughton (Illustrator)
- Collins Field Guide to Freshwater
Life by R. Fitter & R. Manuel.
This is my favourite field Guide. Sadly it is now out of print
so if you want it, you'll need to search the secondhand book stores at
Amazon
or AddAll.
- The Observer's Book Of Pond Life by
Clegg.
A great little book, also, sadly out of print. Search for it on Amazon
or AddAll.
